Kumru Seljuk Apak Caron, daughter of Turgut Aytug and Gul Apak, wife of Joseph Caron, mother of Jules Kurt, André Yasuhiro and Yasemin Naomi, sister of Hatun Aytug and Peter Aytug (both of NY), and grandmother of Maya and Mia Fonseca Caron, passed away in great dignity, on October 6, at her home in West Vancouver, surrounded by her immediate family, and following a lengthy illness. She was 69 years old.

Kumru was born in Aleppo, Syria where her father, Turgut, a diplomat, served as Consul. Following her father in his diplomatic career, Kumru was educated in Turkey, Switzerland, Taipei (with her father as Ambassador to the Republic of China), and Tokyo (during his Ambassadorial posting). Kumru graduated from the prestigious Sacred Heart International School in that city, in 1970.

Employed as librarian at the Canadian Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, she met Joseph, a newly minted diplomat and Trade Commissioner, in 1973. They married in 1975, prior to being posted to Japan and sent to the US State Department Foreign Language School in Yokohama, where they both pursued two years of intensive Japanese language training, and a subsequent 3-year assignment to the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo. There followed two further postings to Japan in the 1980s and 1990s, interspersed with reassignments in Ottawa. All three of Kumru and Joseph’s children were born in Japan.

During these peripatetic and busy years raising a family, Kumru nevertheless found the time to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Translation Studies at l’Université d’Ottawa. This served her well in the 1990s, when she was employed by the Tokyo International Trade Fair Commission as translator of information and technical brochures and materials for foreign participants at the fairs.

In her role as ‘Madame l’Ambassadrice’ and chatelaine of the Ambassador’s residences in Beijing, Tokyo and New Delhi, Kumru brought dignity, grace, humor, a facility with languages and immense experience during the concluding nine years of her life in the diplomatic community.

In 2010, Kumru and Joseph retired to their home in West Vancouver. She will be fondly remembered by her family and her friends from around the world, but none more so than Joseph, who has lost the love of his life, his best friend, his greatest teacher and source of his happiness.

Kumru est née à Aleppo, en Syrie, où son père, Turgut, un diplomate, servait comme consul. La carrière de son père a permis à Kumru une scolarisation en Turquie, en Suisse, à Taïwan et à Tokyo, son Père étant Ambassadeur à la République de Chine et, par la suite, au Japon. Kumru a obtenu son baccalauréat à la prestigieuse International School of the Sacred Heart à Tokyo, en 1970.

C’est en tant que bibliothécaire à l’ambassade du Canada à Ankara, en Turquie, qu’elle a rencontré Joseph en 1973, un tout nouveau diplomate et délégué commercial. Ils se sont mariés en 1975 avant de procéder à Yokohama, au Japon où ils ont tous les deux obtenu une formation intensive de deux ans en la langue japonaise, au US State Department Language School. Ceci fut suivit d’une nomination diplomatique de trois ans à l’ambassade du Canada à Tokyo.

Par après, se sont suivies deux autres séjours au Japon, durant  les années 1980s et 1990s, entrecoupées par des retours à Ottawa. Leurs trois enfants sont tous nés au Japon.

En dépit de ces année de déplacement et les obligations familiales, Kumru a réussi à obtenir une licence en sciences de la traduction à l’Université d’Ottawa. Cela lui a bien servi auprès du Tokyo International Trade Fair Commission où, en tant que traductrice, elle prépara les brochures d’information générale ainsi que technique pour les participants étrangers aux foires.

Comme « Madame l’ambassadrice » et Chatelaine des résidences d’Ambassadeur à Beijing, Tokyo, et New Delhi, Kumru contribua pleinement et de façon exemplaire une dignité, une grâce, de l’humour, une facilité avec les langues, et une immense connaissance des normes diplomatiques.

En 2010, Kumru et Joseph ont pris résidence à West Vancouver.

Kumru fut, pour ses multiples amis, inoubliable; pour sa famille, la source de sagesse et de bonté; et pour Joseph, l’amour de sa vie, son meilleur amie. La vie est éteinte, mais les souvenirs et l’inspiration pour sa famille et ses amis seront toujours là.

Une commémoration aura lieu dans un avenir prochain.
