Description: Gordon Smith was born in 1919 in East Brighton in England and became known as a renowned contemporary Canadian Artist. His nature-driven abstract paintings were inspired by the landscapes of British Columbia. Smith took inspiration from the Canadian landscapes but he made them his own by playing with representation and abstraction. In his life time, Smith won numerous prestigious awards such as the Order of Canada, Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts, and the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts. Smith passed away on January 18, 2020 at the age of 100, leaving behind a rich legacy as an educator, at the original Vancouver School of Art and later at the University of British Columbia.
