Memorial Totem Pole
Squamish Nation artist Darren Yelton (K’nakweltn) has carved a totem pole in celebration of the life of his mother, Dolores Yelton, and to remember all those who have passed away from cancer.
The totem pole honours the Palliative Care team that took care of his mother and provides an opportunity for community members to donate and create a special tribute for their loved ones.
With a donation of $250, a plaque engraved with the name of your loved one will be displayed on the totem pole, which stands on the hospital grounds outside the South Tower at St. Georges Avenue and 13th Street.
Your tribute donation will honour your loved one’s life while helping expand the LGH Oncology Clinic, supporting future patients and families with compassionate cancer care. Couples may be honoured together on a single plaque;
otherwise, each plaque bears one name.

FAQ
What is the expected timeline for the installation of my relative’s plaque?
Lions Gate Hospital Foundation does not have a specific timeline for when a plaque will be installed, as the timing is at the discretion of the artist. We provide the artist with the names in batches, and he is responsible for installing the plaques on the Totem Pole.
As a result, the timing may vary depending on the artist’s schedule and the number of plaques being completed.
I noticed that some names have already been installed on the Totem Pole. Why has my relative’s name not yet been installed, even though I made an early donation?
The names currently installed on the Totem Pole are members of the artist’s family. No donor-purchased plaques have been installed on the Totem Pole yet.
Will I be notified when my relative’s plaque has been installed on the Totem Pole?
Yes. We are working on a process to notify families once their relative’s plaque has been installed. An email notification will be sent to the donor or primary contact person listed in our records.
Why were donors who purchased plaques not invited to the Totem Pole installation ceremony?
The Totem Pole installation ceremony was an event hosted by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and was planned as an invitation-only gathering due to space limitations. The guest list was organized by VCH and was limited to selected guests and representatives directly involved in the project.
We truly appreciate the support of everyone who purchased a plaque in memory of a loved one. While plaque donors were not included in the guest list for this particular ceremony, their contributions are an important part of the Totem Pole project and the lasting tribute it represents.
