It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of David Mackenzie, in his 80th year, on Monday June 23, 2025 at The North Shore Hospice, North Vancouver, British Columbia.
Loving husband to Ann. Cherished father to Peter (Marney), Jonathan (Debbie) and Beth (Alan). Wonderful grandfather to Sarah, Jane, Andrew, Mia, Charlotte and Leah. David was a very kind and gentle man who valued his family more than anything. We are forever grateful to him for the love he gave and the example that he set for all of us.
David was born to Sam and Margaret Mackenzie of Georgetown, Ontario on August 29, 1945. He is survived by his brother Sandy and his sister Marna. He attended Appleby College in Oakville before completing a Business Degree, majoring in Economics, from the University of Western Ontario in 1966. David enjoyed sports, focusing on Hockey and rugby in his youth and as an adult loved downhill skiing.
David and Ann met at church in their teens and have been together ever since. He was a wonderful son-in-law to Jack and Ruth and a beloved brother-in-law to Susan, Mary and Jack.
David’s early career began in the family business (JB Mackenzie and Sons, est. 1895), working alongside his father and brother. After the birth of their 3 children and with a desire to grow his career in the corporate world of the Lumber and Building Materials industry, David and Ann made the decision to move their family to Scarborough. In the early 1970’s, while at an industry event held in Whistler BC, Ann and David took a drive through West Vancouver, dreaming of one day being able to live there.
In 1989 that dream to move west was fulfilled. David and Ann enjoyed many years in West Vancouver, leading an active Westcoast lifestyle that included skiing and hiking. David’s love of hockey was a lifelong passion. He skated regularly at the West Vancouver Recreation Centre for many years, where he met a wonderful group of ‘skating buddies’ with whom he maintained weekly coffee meetings until he was admitted to hospital in early June of this year.
Diagnosed with an aggressive form of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in early 2022, David fought bravely for 3 1/2 years, under the superior guidance and care of Dr. Ardashes Avanessian, Oncologist at Lions Gate Hospital. David lost his battle in the early evening of June 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the North Shore Hospice in North Vancouver, British Columbia.
Very special thanks to the entire staff at the Lions Gate Oncology Clinic and to the team at The North Shore Hospice who cared for him in his final days. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation, in David’s name to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation in support of the North Shore Hospice. A celebration of David’s life will take place for family and friends at a later date.
