Maria Rucci

Maria Rucci Obituary

Maria Rucci (November 9, 1946 – October 18, 2026) passed away unexpectedly following a swift, courageous battle with cancer, leaving a profound void in the hearts of her family and community. She was a loving, beautiful, kind, and meticulous woman—a devoted matriarch whose vibrant spirit, stoic strength, and hard work built a beautiful life for her family.

Born in Sepino, Campobassa, Italy, Maria immigrated to Canada at the age of 16 alongside her mother and her sister. Settling in North Vancouver to join her siblings, she built a life rooted deeply in family tradition. In 1966, she wed her beloved husband, Giuseppe (Joe) Rucci, after a long-distance courtship. Together, they raised their family with love and unwavering devotion until Joe’s passing on Christmas Day, 2023.

Maria was a hard-working woman who found great fulfillment in everything she did. In the late 1970’s, she joined the linen department at Lions Gate Hospital, spending over two decades balancing her hard work with her genuine love for people. She treasured connecting with the doctors, nurses, coworkers, and patients, always ready to share a warm chat or a good laugh. Outside of work, she loved tending to her garden, attending Church on Sundays, cleaning her beautiful home, meeting up with family and friends, and taking long daily walks where she would smile and greet everyone she passed.

Upon retiring in 2001, Maria dedicated herself fully to her greatest joy: her grandchildren. She became the ultimate caregiver, transforming her home into a lively hub of laughter, music, and play for her grandchildren, their cousins, and even the neighborhood children. Her love language was undeniably food, a gift she shared generously during her great Sunday dinners, which she proudly hosted for her family for over thirty years.

Though her loss is a sudden and devastating shock, Maria’s strength, love, and resilient spirit will live on forever in the family she protected so fiercely.

She is survived by her loving family, including her daughter Cristina, son John, daughter-in-law Debbie, and her cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Samuel, Travis, Sophia, and Elijah, as well a large, closely-knit network of extended family and friends who will miss her dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations could be made in Maria’s memory to: Lions Gate Hospital Foundation / North Shore Hospice or Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
